GREE 150 - Intro to Modern Greek Lit
This course offers an introduction to Modern Greek literature by examining its history and by focusing on fiction and poetry published in Greek since national independence (1821). The course is based on readings (all in English) of works which have enjoyed critical or popular acclaim such as those by Seferis, Cavafis, Elytis and Papadiamantis. We will explore the relationships which link the literary works with their historical context and with other literary works. Moreover, we will consider how these works relate to classical Greek literature, as well as to us and other works we are familiar with. We will attempt to discover if the themes and questions they raise have an impact or illuminate Greek culture and our culture. The emphasis of the course is on the literary text of Modern Greek writers.
